YouTube updates public view-counting system globally

YouTube has implemented a global change to its public view-counting system, effective August 24. Under the new standard, a view is recorded as soon as playback begins from the first frame. Previously, long-form videos required a minimum watch duration—estimated by many to be approximately 30 seconds—to be counted toward public totals.

This adjustment applies to Shorts, long-form videos, and live streams. As a result, public view counters are expected to rise more rapidly, though these totals may be less representative of sustained audience attention. To provide a more nuanced understanding of reach, YouTube will continue to offer ‘engaged views’ within its Advanced Mode Analytics, which tracks whether viewers continued watching after the initial playback.

The change does not impact monetization or the YouTube Partner Program (YPP). Earnings and eligibility will continue to rely on engaged views and engaged watch hours rather than the new public view metric. YouTube also noted that it will continue to filter out low-quality activity, such as repeated views from multiple windows or devices, to ensure metric integrity.
