YouTube updates view counting metrics and monetization thresholds
YouTube has implemented a new metric system for counting views across all formats, including long-form videos, Shorts, livestreams, and podcasts. As of August 24, a view is recorded as soon as the first frame of a video plays. While this change is intended to standardize measurement across different formats, it may lead to a significant increase in public view counts—potentially by as much as 30%—without a corresponding increase in actual watch time or revenue.
To distinguish between passive views and active engagement, YouTube has introduced “Engaged views,” a metric that reflects when a user intentionally chooses to continue watching. This distinction remains critical for evaluating content performance and monetization potential.
Adding to the challenges for creators, YouTube plans to double the threshold for new creators to join the partner program and begin sharing ad revenue by 2027. This policy shift is expected to increase pressure on smaller creators attempting to monetize their content on the platform.
