YPF launches Gulf San Matías studies for Argentina LNG export project

Starting on 27 June, YPF will conduct a month‑long geophysical and oceanographic campaign in the Gulf San Matías, Rio Negro. The survey will use the vessels Atlantic Dama, Rustringen and the launch Bernardo to collect high‑resolution data on seabed morphology, sediment composition, sub‑surface structure and marine conditions such as currents and sea‑level variations.

The information is intended to support the pre‑engineering phase of the Argentina LNG initiative, which aims to export gas from the Vaca Muerta basin via two floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) units. The project, backed by partners including Italy’s Eni and ADNOC’s XRG, targets a production capacity of about 12 million tonnes per year and seeks a final investment decision before year‑end. YPF says the work will follow international safety and environmental standards to minimise impact on the marine ecosystem.
