Vaca Muerta: Two workers die in YPF gas plant accident

Two oil workers, Jonathan Meliqueo and Cristian Latorre, died following a major industrial accident at the Rincón del Mangrullo block in the Vaca Muerta formation, Neuquén. The incident occurred at the USP 2 Primary Separator Unit plant, which is operated by YPF in a 50/50 joint venture with Pampa Energía.

Preliminary investigations suggest the tragedy was caused by a high-pressure gas line decompression rather than an explosion. Reports indicate a 12-inch pipe failed as it entered a receiving trap, causing a metal component to break loose and strike the workers. Meliqueo died instantly, while Latorre was airlifted to a medical center in critical condition before later succumbing to his injuries.

Local authorities and prosecutor Eugenia Titanti have secured the site to conduct technical and material forensics. The Private Oil Workers Union of Río Negro, Neuquén, and La Pampa noted that the deceased were not covered by their specific collective bargaining agreement, though the union has offered assistance to the families.
