YPF operations in Vaca Muerta

Overview

In the Vaca Muerta formation, industrial operations at YPF-operated sites have seen both fatal accidents and technological transitions. In late August, a major industrial accident occurred at the Rincón del Mangrullo block in Neuquén. Preliminary investigations into the incident at the USP 2 Primary Separator Unit suggest a high-pressure gas line decompression caused a 12-inch pipe to fail, resulting in the deaths of two workers, Jonathan Meliqueo and Cristian Latorre.

By early September, YPF introduced new technology to the region by implementing the first electric fracturing set in Argentina. This shift replaces diesel-powered internal combustion engines with electric power generated on-site from residual natural gas, a move intended to reduce operating costs, improve profitability, and decrease environmental impact.
