Yucatán and Quintana Roo lead Mexico in influenza cases

The Yucatán Peninsula is experiencing a significant surge in respiratory illnesses, specifically influenza and COVID-19, during the summer season. According to reports from the Secretaría de Salud and the Sistema Nacional de Vigilancia Epidemiológica (Sinave), the week of July 27 to August 3 saw the highest weekly increase for both viruses in 2026.

Yucatán currently leads Mexico in influenza cases during this interseasonal period with 96 confirmed cases, accounting for 26.8% of the national total. Quintana Roo follows in second place with 55 cases, while Campeche has recorded eight. Together, these three states account for 159 confirmed cases in the region.

Health officials note that the upward trend is likely driven by increased human mobility, family gatherings, and recreational travel during the summer vacation period. Along with Mexico City, Tabasco, and Sinaloa, Yucatán and Quintana Roo are part of a group of five entities that concentrate 60.3% of all registered influenza cases in the country.
