Plaza La Isla lake operator faces fines after fatal amoeba infection
A company operating the artificial lake at Plaza La Isla in Mérida, Yucatán, faces fines of up to 2 million pesos following the death of a 34-year-old instructor due to a Naegleria fowleri infection. The microorganism, commonly known as the ‘brain-eating amoeba,’ was confirmed in the water by the National Network of Public Health Laboratories and the Institute of Diagnosis and Epidemiological Reference (InDRE).
Health authorities report that over 300 people were exposed to the contaminated water, with approximately 80% being minors. While 181 individuals have been discharged from observation, 180 people remain under medical monitoring. A second period of epidemiological surveillance is scheduled to conclude on October 4.
Miguel Alberto Alcocer Gamboa, the Yucatán Health Secretary, clarified that the health department is not responsible for providing financial compensation to the victim's family, stating that such claims must be handled through appropriate legal channels. The lake remains closed, and the responsible company, Fornelos, must complete sanitation processes and address regulatory observations before further testing can occur. As of mid-September, the State Attorney General's Office reported no formal criminal complaints had been filed regarding the fatality.
