Yucatán health officials investigate water bodies after fatal amoeba case
The Yucatán Ministry of Health has launched a sanitary investigation into local water bodies following the first confirmed case of Naegleria fowleri, a brain-eating amoeba, in the state. The infection resulted in the death of an aquatic activities instructor at the artificial lake in Plaza La Isla.
Authorities have fined the company Wake Club Fornelos Yucatán approximately 2.1 million pesos (18,000 UMAs) for sanitary irregularities. Inspections revealed a lack of cleaning programs, the presence of mold and biofilm, deficient water circulation, and an absence of chlorine. The lake remains closed, and the company must prove water sanitation and present maintenance logs before any reopening can be considered.
Health Secretary Alberto Alcocer Gamboa reported that 148 people, 48 percent of whom are children, are currently under medical surveillance after having contact with the water. Officials are expanding testing to other public and private water bodies in Mérida, including La Plancha, Centenario, Cabo Norte, Animaya, and the Parque Ecológico del Poniente. Residents who experienced contact with the water and exhibit fever, headaches, or neurological changes are urged to seek medical attention at Hospital O’Horán.
