Yucatán Mayors Press CFE to End Widespread Power Outages

Mayors from the National Action Party (PAN) in Yucatán formed a common front to demand immediate action from the Federal Electricity Commission (CFE) after repeated blackouts that have left thousands without electricity, water, and disrupted health services and businesses. The mayors, led by Mérida mayor Cecilia Patrón Laviada, cited high temperatures and rising demand as aggravating factors and called for preventive maintenance, rapid repair of substations and prioritized response to fault reports.

State PAN leader Álvaro Cetina criticised the Yucatán government’s handling of the energy crisis, accusing officials of breaking earlier promises about energy sufficiency and tariff stability. He highlighted two rejected initiatives – re‑classifying the state to a lower electricity tariff (1FY) and providing discounts per hour of outage – and urged authorities to support measures that lower electricity costs for families. Cetina also noted an unanswered request for information on the Merida IV combined‑cycle plant.
