Yucatán opens new public mediation center to ease court caseload

The Judicial Defense Institute of Yucatán (Indepey) inaugurated a specialized mediation room in Mérida to handle family, civil and commercial disputes through alternative dispute resolution. The facility aims to resolve conflicts quickly, confidentially and without resorting to litigation, thereby reducing case backlogs and costs.

Indepey director Christian Rolando Hurtado Can said the opening “strengthens the alternative dispute resolution system and expands the tools of the public defender.” Certified mediators will conduct proceedings based on legality, impartiality, equity, confidentiality and voluntariness. The ceremony was attended by magistrate Rómulo Antonio Bonilla Castañeda and senior public defender officials.
