Tropical waves trigger heavy rains and heat across Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula
On June 20‑21 2026 Mexico’s National Meteorological Service warned that tropical waves 8, 9 and a developing wave 10 would bring widespread heavy rain, thunderstorms and strong winds to the Yucatán Peninsula. In Quintana Roo, Cancún and nearby coastal municipalities, rain accumulations of 50‑75 mm are forecast, with wind gusts of 40‑70 km/h and sea‑state heights of 1.5‑2.5 m. Temperatures are expected to reach 40‑45 °C in the western states and heat‑index values up to 50 °C in parts of Yucatán, prompting health alerts for heat‑stroke risk.
The same systems will also affect central and northern Mexico, producing intense rains with hail and lightning in states such as Durango, Zacatecas, Jalisco and the Mexico City region. A new tropical wave approaching the peninsula on Sunday is expected to increase rainfall and storm activity further, while a dry line in northern Mexico will continue to generate isolated thunderstorms elsewhere.
