Yucatán population surpasses 2.5 million mark
New data from the National Institute of Statistics and Geography (INEGI) reveals that Yucatán’s population has surpassed 2.5 million for the first time, reaching 2,502,326 residents. This represents an 8.7% increase over the last five years, though the annual growth rate has decelerated from 2.0% in the previous period to 1.4%.
The demographic shift is characterized by a significant rise in non-native residents. While native Yucatecans made up 92.24% of the population in 2000, they now account for 86.14% in 2025. Conversely, the number of residents born outside the state has nearly tripled, rising from approximately 128,811 to 344,779.
Urbanization is heavily concentrated in the Mérida metropolitan area, which has become Mexico’s 10th-largest metropolitan area. Notably, the state is experiencing a real estate boom that is outpacing population growth; the housing inventory increased by 17.8% between 2020 and 2025, more than double the rate of population expansion.
