Yucatán power outages continue as CFE delays fixes until 2028

Frequent blackouts have plagued Mérida and other parts of Yucatán, prompting municipal leaders to meet virtually with CFE director Emilia Calleja. The utility warned that a full resolution could take two to three years, potentially extending to 2028, leaving residents without reliable electricity.

The local branch of the Cámara Nacional de la Industria de Transformación (Canacintra) presented five concrete requests to CFE: transparent accounting of announced investments for grid upgrades; a firm commissioning date for the Riviera Maya power plant in Valladolid; a guaranteed‑budget modernization plan for the transmission and distribution network; advance notice of scheduled maintenance outages; and a compensation scheme for users affected by prolonged cuts. Canacintra warned that the outages cost millions of pesos for industry and thousands for households, disrupting production, food storage, and daily life.
