Yucatán proposes new regulations for artificial lakes
The Government of Yucatán is developing a regulatory proposal for artificial lakes used for recreational activities. This initiative follows a fatal incident at the Plaza La Isla lake, where the amoeba Naegleria fowleri was detected after a water sports instructor fell ill and died.
Through the Inter-institutional Table for the Formation and Installation of the State Commission for Safe Water, health authorities and the private sector are working to unify actions to prevent microbiological and physicochemical risks in water used for human consumption and recreation. The proposed regulations will establish criteria for water quality monitoring, sanitation, filtration systems, and the management of aquatic ecosystems and fauna.
In addition to regulating artificial bodies of water, the commission will oversee natural water sources and supply systems to protect public health. The plan includes diagnostic assessments of aquatic ecosystems and improved supervision of public and recreational spaces.
