Yucatán's Marina Marathon draws 3,700 runners as Governor launches historic route

The 37th edition of the Marina Marathon in Yucatán took place on June 7, 2026, with about 3,700 participants competing along the historic route from the Monumento a la Patria in Mérida to the port of Progreso. Governor Joaquín Díaz Mena gave the starting shot and attended the prize‑giving ceremony alongside local officials and representatives of the Navy and the National Guard.

Athletes ran in several categories, including the 42.195‑km marathon, relay, wheelchair, half‑marathon and a 5‑km race. In the women's absolute category, Micaela Rayo Reyes of Cuernavaca claimed first place, followed by Kenyans Rose Jepkorir Kangogo and Leah Jebiwot Kigen. The men's absolute title went to Kenyan Stephen Ndege, with Fernando Cervantes Caudillo of Guanajuuto and Iván Anzaldo of Tulancingo rounding out the podium. The event also marked the return of the traditional linear course linking Mérida with the coastal city of Progreso.
