Yukon Employees’ Union placed under PSAC trusteeship

The Public Service Alliance of Canada (PSAC) has placed the Yukon Employees’ Union (YEU) under full trusteeship, effective August 6, following a period of administration that began in March. The move affects the 5,900-member union and involves the suspension of YEU bylaws and the removal of the president, vice-president, and directors from their positions.

PSAC officials Josée-Anne Spirito and Chris Aylward stated the decision was driven by systemic governance and structural issues rather than financial misappropriation. Key problems identified include blurred lines between elected leadership and staff, failure of local branches to comply with union bylaws, and gaps in the bylaws themselves that hindered effective representation.

Administrator Chris Aylward reported facing significant resistance during the administration period, describing instances where progress was stalled by executive members questioning his authority and interpretations. The trusteeship is intended as a non-punitive measure to stabilize the organization, clarify roles, and ensure local branches meet basic regulatory requirements.
