Yukon River Chinook Salmon returns exceed initial estimates

Chinook Salmon returns on the Yukon River are exceeding initial expectations for the 2026 season. Data from the Department of Fisheries and Oceans (DFO) shows that as of August 4, 27,815 fish had passed the sonar monitoring station in Eagle, Alaska.

This figure has led the DFO to update its in-season estimate. While the agency originally expected approximately 18,000 salmon to reach Canadian waters, the revised projection suggests roughly 30,000 fish will cross the international border into Canada.

Despite this upward trend, the population remains a concern. Chinook numbers have been in steady decline since the 1980s, reaching a low point around 2022 when only 12,000 fish passed the Eagle station. Current projections still fall short of the established rebuilding target of 71,000 returning fish.
