Yunlin County begins flood mitigation project in Shuilin Township

The Yunlin County Government has commenced a major flood mitigation project in Shuilin Township to address recurring flooding caused by extreme weather and typhoons. The project focuses on the Wanxing Drain, where heavy rains—specifically following Typhoon Gaemi—have previously caused embankment breaches and significant damage to local farmland and residential areas.

The first phase of the construction, funded by the Water Resources Agency, involves an investment of approximately 189.5 million TWD. Key components include the construction of a new pumping station with a total discharge capacity of 10cms and a low-lying detention basin with a capacity of 6,800m3. These facilities are designed to manage water levels when tidal gates are closed and to prevent runoff from flooding surrounding agricultural lands.

Local officials aim to complete the work within 480 days to ensure protection before the next flood season. Additionally, a monitoring system will be installed to allow real-time tracking of water conditions, enhancing safety for local inspection teams.
