Zé Medeiros proposes inmate labor to compensate rural producers
Federal Deputy and Senate candidate Zé Medeiros (PL) has proposed a legislative measure in Mato Grosso requiring inmates convicted of property crimes against rural producers to work to compensate their victims. The proposal aims to ensure that victims have priority in receiving financial restitution, with a portion of the inmate's wages being directly allocated to cover losses such as stolen machinery, livestock, or agricultural supplies.
The measure would allow judges to monitor inmate earnings to ensure compensation, while also counting these efforts toward the prisoner's progression through the penal regime. Medeiros argues that the law should ensure victims are not forgotten by the State after a crime is committed.
In a separate political development, the Mayor of Rondonópolis, Cláudio Ferreira (PL), has declared his active support for Medeiros's Senate candidacy during a live broadcast. Ferreira emphasized the need for a representative in Brasília focused on municipalist agendas and a firm stance against the Workers' Party (PT). The announcement highlighted internal divisions within the Liberal Party (PL) in Mato Grosso, as Ferreira's support for Medeiros notably omitted any mention of Wellington Fagundes's potential candidacy for the state government.
