Netherlands faces tourism challenges from etiquette to crime

The Netherlands is facing various challenges related to high volumes of tourism. In the province of Zeeland, local media outlet Omroep Zeeland has published a list of unwritten rules for visitors, specifically targeting German tourists. These guidelines include advice on supermarket etiquette, such as not blocking aisles with large families, and reminders regarding driving speeds and lane usage.

In the village of Zaanse Schans, the influx of approximately two million annual visitors has caused significant disruption for the local population of 100 residents. Reports indicate that crowds often disregard privacy, climb fences, and use residents' private property, leading to a sense of being overwhelmed by the tourist presence.

Additionally, travel warnings have been issued regarding crime in the country. Influencer Luuk has cautioned travelers using international train routes, such as those connecting Amsterdam to Berlin or Paris, about thieves who target unattended bags at stations and on trains. Data from 2025 indicates that roughly 20 percent of the Dutch population aged 15 and older reported being victims of crime, with higher rates in major cities like Amsterdam.
