Zach Bryan discusses sobriety in interview with Matthew McConaughey

Country music artist Zach Bryan has shared details regarding his journey toward sobriety during a two-hour interview with actor Matthew McConaughey. The conversation, released on Bryan's YouTube channel, follows the release of his new eight-song EP, ‘Young Manhood and Other Donatable Organs’.

Bryan described a turning point during a solo month-long motorcycle trip across the United States. While the trip included activities such as skydiving and dining with veterans, Bryan noted that he spent much of his time drinking at local bars. He recounted a specific moment at a truck stop outside of Seattle where, while sitting on a curb with a beer, he experienced an epiphany regarding the emptiness of his lifestyle and questioned the purpose of his actions.

Reflecting on his past perspective, Bryan admitted that he previously viewed sobriety as a lack of self-control, stating, ‘I always thought sobriety was a joke because it's people who couldn't control themselves celebrating not being able to control themselves.’ He acknowledged that he did not realize he had a problem with alcohol until the solo journey prompted him to reevaluate his life.
