Zach Cregger discusses Resident Evil and new project The Flood

Director Zach Cregger is developing new projects following his work on Barbarian and Weapons. His upcoming Resident Evil film offers a unique perspective on Raccoon City, focusing on a medical courier named Bryan. Unlike traditional entries in the franchise, the film utilizes a protagonist who is unprepared and lacks survival knowledge, aiming to create a more human sense of panic. The approach is inspired by gaming elements such as resource limitations, mission structures, and camera perspectives rather than a direct adaptation of specific game plots.

Additionally, Cregger is working on a sci-fi horror project titled The Flood in collaboration with Amblin Pictures. Cregger has compared the intended psychological impact of the film to the unsettling nature of Stanley Kubrick’s 2001: A Space Odyssey. While he noted that The Flood is not a traditional horror movie, it features disturbing scenes and a unique narrative structure. The project moved to a theatrical release model after Cregger expressed a preference for a traditional cinema run over a Netflix release.
