Zadar's Diklo landfill faces legal action over improper waste disposal

The State Inspectorate's environmental protection department has confirmed irregularities at the Diklo landfill in Zadar, Croatia. Investigations revealed that unprocessed, baled waste from the Varaždin region was improperly accepted at the site.

Authorities found that the Diklo landfill management failed to conduct mandatory compliance checks on incoming waste, meaning no required chemical analyses were performed on samples. As a result, misdemeanor proceedings have been initiated against the company Čistoća d. o. o. Zadar and its responsible persons for violations of the Waste Management Act. Other local companies involved in transporting waste to the site were also found to be in violation of regulations.

The findings validate previous warnings from independent city councilor Daniel Radeta, who raised concerns regarding the transport of shredded plastic, medical, and electronic waste via the company Metali Reciklaža from Bibinje. Radeta warned that such materials pose a high risk of contaminating groundwater in the sensitive karst terrain.

While MP Ivan Matić noted that his inquiries to the ministry regarding the origin of the waste went unanswered, the inspection has now confirmed the presence of Varaždin waste at the site. The director of Čistoća Zadar, John Ivan Krstičević, stated that the Diklo landfill is scheduled to close within a month and a half.
