Waste management investigations in Croatia

Investigations into illegal waste management practices in Croatia have intensified across different regions. In Zadar, the State Inspectorate confirmed irregularities at the Diklo landfill, where unprocessed waste from the Varaždin region was improperly accepted without mandatory chemical analyses. Misdemeanor proceedings have been initiated against the management company Čistoća d. o. o. Zadar and several transport companies for violating the Waste Management Act. Concerns were previously raised regarding the transport of medical, electronic, and shredded plastic waste, which posed risks to groundwater in karst terrain.

Concurrently, a large-scale investigation into a waste scandal in Lika has progressed through an intensive phase of evidence gathering. State Attorney General Ivan Turudić indicated that a decision may be reached following a year-long period of secret surveillance and wiretapping involving approximately ten individuals. The prosecution's actions intensified after receiving reports from the Ministry of the Interior in mid-2023, and the investigation is now moving toward next steps following the completion of expert evaluations.
