Zagreb's Sarajevska Road expansion and tram line near completion

Zagreb is completing a major infrastructure project that expands Sarajevska Road and adds a new tram line. The works, financed entirely from the city budget, cost nearly €25 million (excluding VAT). They include 1.8 km of new road widened to three lanes in each direction, pedestrian and cycling paths, noise barriers, and the construction of 2.25 km of tram track with eight new stops and a temporary terminus.

The expansion will give direct tram access to roughly 35,000 residents of the Travno, Utrina, Dugave, Hrelić and Jakuševec neighborhoods – the first significant tram‑network extension in Zagreb in 25 years. Most utilities and supporting infrastructure are finished; remaining work is surfacing, landscaping and completing the temporary terminus so that tram service can start in autumn 2026, before the later construction of a viaduct.
