Zagreb Hospital Receives Croatia's First Photon-Counting CT Scanner

Zagreb Clinical Hospital (KBC Zagreb) has installed a new photon‑counting computed tomography (CT) scanner, the first of its kind in the Croatian public health system. The device, valued at €3.5 million, uses photon‑counting technology to produce highly detailed images, improving early detection of heart, vascular, tumor, neurological and lung diseases while reducing patients' radiation exposure.

The scanner is part of a broader €20 million investment programme to modernise the hospital’s radiology department, which also includes a 3‑tesla MRI, a digital angiography system and a digital X‑ray unit. Hospital director Fran Borovečki highlighted the technology as a major step forward for diagnostic quality, and Health Minister Irena Hrstić said the purchase demonstrates the government’s commitment to providing top‑level medical care in the public sector.
