Balkan summer festivals light up Croatia, Montenegro, Bosnia and Serbia

A wave of cultural festivals marks the start of summer in the Balkans.

In Croatia, the TAM TAM Music Festival runs 9–18 July on Hvar’s Sućuraj peninsula, featuring a full lineup of indie bands, workshops and a vegan‑focused camping program. The Dani Mile Gojsalić celebration in Kostanje (11–12 July) offers open‑air klapa concerts and a theatre performance “Kamo ide ovaj svijet?”. Zagreb hosts a free open‑air concert of 1990s hits in front of the HNK on 4 July.

Montenegro’s agenda includes the 34th Kotorski children’s theatre festival in Kotor, opening 2 July with the play “Graditi grad”, and a free concert on Budva’s Trg slikara on 13 July celebrating Montenegro Statehood Day, headlined by Doris Dragović and Boris Režak. The City Theatre of Podgorica presents three summer premieres – a drama in Bar (15 July), the opera “Ostrvo” in Kotor (19 July) and the comedy “Krađa, prekrađa i nekrađa” in Budva (29 July).

Bosnia and Herzegovina’s Baščaršije Nights festival runs throughout July in Sarajevo, opening with a performance by Bombaj štampa and culminating on 30 July with a tribute to Safet Isović. In Belgrade, the Alek Kavčić Foundation runs a ten‑day Children’s Theatre Marathon (16–25 July) offering free family productions.

Together, these events provide free or low‑cost access to music, theatre and traditional folk programmes, drawing locals and tourists alike.
