Zagreb plans traffic changes and pedestrian zone expansions
The City of Zagreb is planning significant urban and traffic reorganizations aimed at prioritizing public transport and pedestrians. In the Ilica area, specifically between Filip Vukasović Street and the intersection with Selska Cesta and Sveti Duh Street, officials are considering converting one existing traffic lane into a dedicated lane for buses and trams.
To assess the impact, a three-day traffic count will be conducted to analyze vehicle, pedestrian, and cyclist flow. The project also includes optimizing traffic lights with LED signaling and video detection systems connected to the city's traffic management center.
Additionally, the city intends to expand pedestrian zones, potentially creating a continuous zone from HNK to Zrinjevac, including Teslina and parts of Gajeva streets. While these changes aim to align Zagreb with European urban trends, some local residents and business owners have expressed concerns regarding accessibility for residents, delivery services, and the potential for increased emptiness in certain areas during off-peak hours.
