Zagreb unveils plan for new central pedestrian zone

The City of Zagreb has presented a new conceptual project to transform parts of its city center into a pedestrian zone. Developed by the Institute for Spatial Planning of the City of Zagreb, the plan covers Masarykova and Teslina streets, as well as sections of Preradovićeva and Gajeve streets leading to Berislavićeva street.

The project aims to create a unified, connected public space that links existing pedestrian areas from Trg Republike Hrvatske to Zrinjevac. Key features include the planting of approximately 50 new trees to create a continuous green corridor, 600 square meters of new green surfaces, and the installation of urban amenities such as drinking water fountains and rest areas.

To improve accessibility and safety, the design includes new bicycle parking, designated zones for short-term stops and deliveries, and enhanced accessibility for persons with disabilities. The transformation also involves renewing underground infrastructure and paving the entire area, with some sections designated for calmed traffic between Trg Republike and Gundulićeva street.
