Zakopane experiences record tourism surge and infrastructure strain
Zakopane and the Podhale region are experiencing a massive surge in tourism, with visitor numbers reportedly 18 percent higher than the peak during the last New Year's Eve. According to the Tatra Chamber of Commerce, accommodation occupancy in the area has reached 100 percent, including summer cottages and campsites.
While the high demand is a boon for the industry, it has caused significant strain on local infrastructure. Residents have reported heavy traffic congestion, overcrowded public transport, and issues with waste management. The Tatra National Park has also noted long queues on popular hiking trails, such as those leading to Giewont, Orla Perć, and Rysy, as well as sold-out parking at Morskie Oko.
Despite the high volume of tourists, the median price for a double room in a three-star hotel remains stable at 697 PLN, matching last year's rates. This is approximately 8 percent lower than what was projected in July, suggesting that local businesses may have adjusted prices to ensure occupancy.
