Tourism impacts in Zakopane, Poland

Zakopane, a major mountain resort town in southern Poland, is experiencing significant seasonal tourism activity. The town, which hosts the 57th International Festival of Mountain Folk Culture in late August 2026, attracts approximately 1.5 million visitors annually for hiking and skiing.

However, the high volume of visitors has led to reported strain on the local community. Residents have expressed frustration regarding severe traffic congestion, delays in public transportation, and difficulties performing routine tasks like shopping due to crowds. Additionally, there are concerns regarding overflowing waste, infrastructure struggles, and a rising cost of living driven by the tourism season.

By mid-August 2026, the Podhale region reported a massive surge in tourism, with visitor numbers approximately 18 percent higher than the previous New Year’s Eve peak. The Tatra Chamber of Commerce noted that accommodation occupancy, including campsites and summer cottages, has reached 100 percent.

This influx has intensified infrastructure pressures. The Tatra National Park reported sold-out parking at Morskie Oko and long queues on popular hiking trails, including Giewont, Orla Perć, and Rysy. While demand is high, the median price for a double room in a three-star hotel has remained stable at 697 PLN, matching last year’s rates and sitting roughly 8 percent lower than July projections.
