Zakynthos police distribute helmets instead of fines to motorcyclists

The Zakynthos Traffic Police conducted an initiative for the second consecutive year where motorcycle riders caught without helmets were given new helmets instead of receiving fines. The action took place near the Music School and is part of the nationwide campaign titled ‘Zero Tolerance for Non-Use of Helmets,’ which aligns with the Greece National Road Safety Plan 2030.

Nektarios Tsolos, Commander of the Zakynthos Traffic Department, participated in the event, speaking with riders to emphasize the importance of personal safety and road rules. Zakynthos Mayor George Stassinopoulos also attended to express support for the initiative. According to Tsolos, approximately 90% of riders on the island currently use helmets, and the goal is to reach 100% through such educational efforts.

Under the current Road Traffic Code, the penalties for not wearing a helmet are strict: a first offense carries a 350 euro fine and a one-month license suspension, while repeat offenses can result in a 1,000 euro fine.
