Zambian accountant arrested for allegedly diverting K44.6 million
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has arrested Casious Mweetwa, a 47-year-old former Project Accountant at the Ministry of Community Development and Social Services, for the alleged diversion of K44,657,600.
The funds were intended for the Social Cash Transfer (SCT) Programme, which provides financial assistance to vulnerable households. Mweetwa is facing eight counts, including conspiracy to defraud the government and theft by public servant.
Investigators allege that between May 2025 and August 2026, Mweetwa facilitated eight separate transactions that transferred the funds into the Itezhi-Tezhi District Welfare Assistance Committee account. While the transfers were purportedly for administrative costs within the district, the ACC claims the money was actually diverted for personal benefit. Authorities suspect the funds may have been used to acquire assets such as motor vehicles and real estate. Mweetwa has been released on bond and is expected to appear in court.
