Zamfara, Nigeria: Soldier and Police Officer Killed as Army Repels Terrorist Attack, Rescues Nine Hostages
In the early hours of 2 August 2026, heavily armed militants attempted to infiltrate a Forward Operating Base at Kasuwan Daji in Kaura Namoda Local Government Area, Zamfara State, Nigeria. Troops of the Nigerian Army’s Operation FANSAN YAMMA, together with Mobile Police, engaged the attackers and forced them to retreat into nearby forested areas.
The clash resulted in the deaths of one Nigerian Army officer and one police officer. The militants suffered heavy casualties, with dozens killed or wounded. During the ensuing pursuit, army forces rescued nine civilians who had been abducted from surrounding villages. Authorities also reported that more than 70 residents were taken hostage, with at least 52 still being held according to local reports.
The army deployed additional reinforcements to the area and began mopping‑up operations to track fleeing bandits, whom officials describe as “terrorists” linked to criminal gangs and extremist groups operating in north‑west Nigeria.
