Zamora AI data center faces protests over energy use

A proposed artificial intelligence data center in Monfarracinos, Zamora, has sparked significant local protest due to concerns over energy and water consumption. An expert from the CSIC warned that the facility could consume 20% of the total energy used in the Castilla y León region.

While the project promises an investment of 4,600 million euros and the creation of nearly 500 jobs, environmental groups such as Ecologistas Zamora and Zamora en Pie have filed objections. They cite potential CO2 emissions and the impact on local resources. This follows a Stanford University study indicating that 64% of existing data centers in Spain are located in areas facing water deficits.

The Junta de Castilla y León has initiated the process to designate the facility as a regional project, a move that would accelerate the development process and facilitate necessary land expropriations.
