Spanish courts reactivate major political and influence-peddling investigations

Spain's judicial system is set to reactivate several high-profile investigations following the summer recess. In the Audiencia Nacional, Judge Santiago Pedraz will resume the ‘Leire Díez’ case on September 9. This investigation involves allegations of a scheme to undermine judicial proceedings affecting the Government and the PSOE. Key figures summoned include Ana María Fuentes, the PSOE manager, and Ismael Oliver, an ex-lawyer, both of whom are being investigated for potential involvement in falsifying documents.

Additionally, the ‘Plus Ultra’ case is being reactivated, focusing on alleged influence peddling related to pandemic-era financial rescues for the airline. This probe includes investigations into connections with former President José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero.

Separately, David Sánchez, brother of the Prime Minister, has requested the Provincial Court of Badajoz to amend his sentence. He seeks to remove passages stating he knew his position at the Provincial Council was tailored specifically for him. His defense argues that including these details violates his right to a defense, as he was not questioned on those specific preliminary facts during his trial.
