Zavala road accident kills 24 in Mozambique

A fatal road accident in the Zavala district of Inhambane province, Mozambique, has resulted in 24 deaths. The collision occurred on the night of September 17 on National Road Number 1 (EN1) between a Toyota Quantum passenger vehicle and a MAN Diesel truck belonging to the Mozambique Defense Armed Forces (FADM).

While preliminary investigations by authorities suggested factors such as speeding, fatigue, and irregular overtaking, reports have emerged suggesting the military vehicle may have had mechanical issues. This has sparked debate regarding the maintenance and inspection procedures for official government vehicles. The FADM truck was part of a logistics column traveling for Armed Forces Day ceremonies.

Additionally, the Mozambique Republic Police noted that the passenger vehicle was carrying 24 people despite having a capacity for only 17. Investigations into the conduct of traffic police officers on duty during the incident are also ongoing.
