Namibia road safety and transport fatalities

Overview

Between January 1 and September 16, 2026, Namibia recorded 112 truck-involved crashes, resulting in 48 deaths and 211 injuries. Data from the Motor Vehicle Accident (MVA) Fund indicates that the Erongo and Otjozondjupa regions were responsible for approximately 60% of the fatalities. Collisions were identified as the most frequent accident type, accounting for 57 incidents and 37 deaths.

In response to these statistics, MVA Fund Manager for Accident and Injury Prevention Jones Lutombi has advocated for the revival and expansion of the national rail network. Lutombi proposed that moving long-distance freight from roads to rail could decrease heavy vehicle exposure on major transport corridors, noting that a multimodal transport system is necessary for Namibia to become a regional logistics hub and improve safety for road users.
