Zondacrypto investigation expands with charges against Roman Ż
Polish prosecutors have expanded their investigation into the cryptocurrency exchange Zondacrypto, which was formerly known as BitBay. The probe now includes charges against Roman Ż., a former associate of BitBay founder Sylwester Suszek. Roman Ż. is accused of participating in an organized criminal group and misappropriating approximately 7.8 million PLN in user funds. Authorities detained him following concerns he might flee the country, and prosecutors have requested pretrial detention.
The investigation has grown in scope following reports from customers regarding withdrawal issues in April, with estimated losses exceeding $94 million. Prosecutors have merged the exchange investigation with the ongoing inquiry into the disappearance of Sylwester Suszek, who vanished in March 2022.
The case has also triggered significant political controversy. Prime Minister Donald Tusk cited testimony from Zondacrypto head Przemysław Kral, alleging that former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro was promised 2 million PLN in exchange for legal intervention. Ziobro has denied the allegations, characterizing them as a political provocation.
