Zbiornica Skórzec faces operational limits due to odor complaints

Zbiornica Skórzec, a key facility for processing animal byproducts in Poland, is facing operational restrictions following numerous resident complaints regarding odor nuisances. Since spring 2026, over 90 reports have been filed with the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.

Marcin Cabaj, the company's president, acknowledged decision-making errors, noting that a new technological line for thermal and pressure sterilization was launched before all necessary integrated permits were finalized. The resulting limitations require the company to redirect raw materials to more distant facilities.

The Chief Veterinary Inspectorate has stated that the national system for collecting dead animals remains functional. While there are 7,074 operators of animal byproducts in Poland, only 19 facilities possess the technological capacity to dispose of livestock carcasses, including those from infectious disease outbreaks. This situation highlights the logistical importance of such plants for farm biosecurity.
