Overview

Zbiornica Skórzec, a critical Polish facility for processing animal byproducts, has faced operational restrictions following more than 90 odor nuisance complaints from local residents filed with the Inspectorate for Environmental Protection.

The facility’s president, Marcin Cabaj, attributed the situation to decision-making errors, specifically launching a new technological line for thermal and pressure sterilization before finalizing necessary integrated permits and legal documentation regarding building use. These regulatory issues have caused a paralysis of the plant’s usual activities, forcing the redirection of raw materials to more distant facilities.

While the Chief Veterinary Inspectorate maintains that the national system for collecting dead animals remains functional, the disruption at this site highlights potential vulnerabilities in biosecurity and waste management logistics. Out of 7,074 animal byproduct operators in Poland, only 19 facilities possess the capacity to dispose of livestock carcasses, including those from infectious disease outbreaks.
