ZDF documentary investigates sexual misconduct in techno scene

A new ZDF documentary titled ‘Missbrauch: Insider schockt die Techno-Szene’ investigates allegations of sexual assault and misconduct within the techno music scene. The investigation, part of the series ‘Die Spur’, was prompted by a former concert agency employee who used social media to level serious accusations against well-known DJs.

The documentary names German DJ CARV and Swiss DJ Odymel, noting that both have partially admitted to the allegations. The research highlights a broader movement, with over 300 women reporting their experiences via the Instagram page MeTooDJ. Issues addressed include sexualized violence, the use of date-rape drugs, and rape.

The allegations had significant consequences for the summer festival season, leading organizers in Germany and Belgium, such as Parookaville, to remove certain booked artists from their programs. The documentary also examines the effectiveness of awareness concepts, such as trained staff and safe spaces, in clubs and festivals.
