ZE Energy acquires 200 MW battery storage project in Italy
ZE Energy has acquired the Elena project, a standalone battery energy storage system (BESS) located in Troia, Puglia, Italy. The project, which provides 200 MW of capacity and over 1 GWh of storage, was purchased from the British developer Aura Power.
The facility is designed to connect to a 380 kV high-voltage grid and will offer a storage duration of more than six hours. This capability allows the system to return energy to the grid during periods of high demand, addressing the growing need for electrical flexibility in Southern Italy, a region with high renewable energy deployment.
With the addition of the Elena project, ZE Energy’s total BESS capacity in Italy rises to 300 MW, following its previous standalone project in Sessa Aurunca. This acquisition is part of the company’s broader European strategy to develop and operate storage assets in France, Italy, and Germany, aiming for a total installed capacity of 1.5 GW by 2030.
