President Volodymyr Zelenskyy removed Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander‑in‑chief of Ukraine’s armed forces and appointed 43‑year‑old General‑major Mykhailo Drapatyi to the post. The reshuffle follows several days of mass protests in Kyiv and other cities that erupted after Zelenskyy dismissed defence minister Mykhailo Fedorov, whose clash with Syrskyi over modernising the army – especially the expanded use of drones – had become public. Demonstrators demanded Fedorov’s reinstatement and Syrskyi’s ouster. Zelenskyy thanked Syrskyi for his service and said Drapatyi would lead the force with a “responsible and respectful” approach, quoting Drapatyi’s Facebook post: “I will work responsibly, concentrated and with respect for the people defending our country.” The president also offered Fedorov a senior government role overseeing technology and innovation. The change aims to restore unity within the military and respond to public demand for reforms.
