Zelensky requests 70 billion euros in additional EU aid
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has requested an additional 70 billion euros in aid from European partners, a move that has reportedly caused perplexity among European Union leaders. During a recent EU summit in Brussels, the request caught several heads of state by surprise. Leaders from Hungary, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia immediately declared they would not participate in the proposed loan.
High-ranking officials from the European Council noted that the requested funds are currently unavailable, stating, “We do not know where to find the money.” This new request follows a commitment by EU member states to provide 90 billion euros in aid throughout 2026, to be released over a two-year period.
The financial request comes amid significant political pressure in several nations, including France, Italy, Greece, and Poland, where upcoming elections make justifying continued large-scale financial support to voters increasingly difficult. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen acknowledged that Ukraine’s financial needs continue to grow despite the extensive support already provided by member states.
