Ukraine requests 70 billion euros in additional EU aid

At a European Council summit in Brussels, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy requested at least 70 billion euros in additional financial assistance to cover the country's projected war costs for the upcoming year. Zelenskyy estimated that the total cost of the conflict in the next year will reach approximately 155 billion euros, emphasizing the need for European support for defense, weaponry, and national resilience.

EU leaders have not yet reached an agreement on a financing plan. The European Council has tasked the European Commission with developing options to address the funding gap, with proposals expected by November. Potential solutions being examined include mobilizing unused EU budget funds, seeking contributions from non-EU allies, and issuing new joint loans. Discussions regarding the use of frozen Russian assets to support Ukraine also continued, though Swedish Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson noted that no progress has been made on this front.

The request has highlighted internal divisions within the bloc. Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico rejected participating in any new EU financial mechanism for Ukraine, a position shared by Hungary. Meanwhile, Italian MEP Roberto Vannacci criticized the request, suggesting that the leadership in Kyiv is treating Europe as a personal ATM.
