Ukraine energy infrastructure hit by Russian missile and drone strikes

Russia launched a massive overnight offensive against Ukraine's energy and critical infrastructure, primarily targeting Kyiv and Kharkiv. The attack involved 39 ballistic missiles and over 120 drones. Ukrainian air defenses reported intercepting only four of the missiles and 115 drones. The strikes damaged approximately 30 energy facilities, including thermal power plants and electrical substations, leaving at least 600,000 people without electricity.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy criticized the strikes as a demonstration of Russia's disregard for a proposed energy truce announced by U.S. President Donald Trump. While Trump claimed an agreement had been reached to halt attacks on energy infrastructure, the Kremlin stated that specific terms had not been finalized. In response to the continued targeting of its power grid, Zelenskyy indicated that Ukraine may resume strikes against Russian oil refineries.

Simultaneously, Russia reported significant drone activity directed at its own territory. The Russian Ministry of Defense claimed to have intercepted 604 Ukrainian long-range drones across 15 regions and the Sea of Azov. In the Moscow region, over 200 drones were launched, leading to the temporary suspension of operations at several major airports, including Domodedovo and Sheremetyevo.
