Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky removed General Oleksandr Syrskyi as commander‑in‑chief of the Armed Forces after a week of mass street protests that followed his earlier decision to dismiss Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov. Zelensky announced the change on Telegram, thanked Syrskyi for the defence of Kyiv, the Kharkiv counter‑offensive and the Kursk operation, and said the shift was needed to adapt the military command to the current stage of the war with Russia.

The president named Mykhailo Drapatyi, a 43‑year‑old former commander of Ukraine’s Joint Forces and former head of the Land Forces, as Syrskyi’s replacement. Drapatyi said he would lead the armed forces “with responsibility, total dedication and respect for every soldier”. Demonstrations demanding Fedorov’s return and Syrskyi’s removal continued in Kyiv, Lviv, Odesa, Dnipro and other cities, with thousands of citizens urging a restructuring of the military leadership. Zelensky also offered Fedorov a new post overseeing the country’s defence‑technology sector.

The leadership reshuffle is viewed as an attempt to calm internal unrest while maintaining the chain of command as Ukraine presses its offensive against Russian forces.
