Ukraine warns of dangers to civil aviation in Russian airspace
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has issued a warning to international partners, airlines, and insurers that Russian airspace is becoming extremely dangerous for civil aviation due to increased drone activity. Zelenskyy stated that the days of safety in Russian skies have ended, urging ambassadors and carriers to heed the warning.
Following these statements, Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiha formally notified the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) that Ukraine is exercising its right to self-defense as military operations extend into Russian territory. The notification highlights the growing insecurity of the airspace for civilian flights.
In response, Russian officials have reported intercepting more than 43,300 Ukrainian drones over their territory between June and August. While the warnings have prompted some consideration by international carriers, many airlines continue to operate flights to Russian destinations.
