Zenyazen Escobar García, a 42-year-old federal deputy for the Morena party, was found dead on Friday, September 4, in Veracruz, Mexico. His body was discovered inside his Mercedes-Benz vehicle, which was parked on the side of the Veracruz-Xalapa highway in the community of La Gloria, within the municipality of Puente Nacional.

Preliminary reports indicate that Escobar sustained at least one gunshot wound to the head. While a firearm was found near his body, Veracruz Secretary of Government Ricardo Ahued Bardahuil stated that the vehicle showed no signs of external aggression or ballistic impacts, suggesting the incident may not have been an external attack.

Due to Escobar's status as a federal legislator, the Federal Attorney General's Office (FGR) has taken over the investigation from state authorities to determine the exact circumstances of his death. Escobar had a significant political career, having previously served as the Secretary of Education for Veracruz and as a local deputy.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has called for the FGR to provide updates on the investigation and has expressed condolences to his family. The death occurs amid ongoing concerns regarding political violence in the region.
